Marist Mindset List – 2019 (Class of 2023)

What’s on the pop-culture radar of the incoming college freshmen class?

The annual Mindset List moves from Beloit College this year to Marist College, but still provides a pop-culture snapshot of how incoming college freshmen see the world and have been shaped by what they have – and haven’t – experienced since their birth at the beginning of the 21st century. A new list has been published each year since 1998 (college class of 2002).

Some of my favorite tech/TV/education-related items this year include…

3. “The primary use of a phone has always been to take pictures.”

22. “As they crawled on the floor, TV headlines began crawling at the bottom of the TV screen.”

27. “YouTube has become the video version of Wikipedia.”

34. “Quarterback Troy Aikman has always called the plays live from the press booth.”

44. “Most of them will rent, not buy, their textbooks.”
